Co-terminate CSE Licenses

Align the expiration dates of several licenses or products onto one common date

Overview

Co-termination sets a single common expiration date across several licenses or products. It exists so that an organization holding many SonicWall subscriptions does not have to track and renew each on its own schedule.

Co-termination compared with proration

The two are related but are not the same thing:

  • Proration happens automatically whenever an activation key is applied. It converts the value of what is held into the equivalent amount of what is being applied. See Renew, Upgrade, or Downgrade a CSE License.
  • Co-termination is an action you choose. You select the licenses to align, and the portal calculates one common date from their combined remaining value. Proration is the mechanism it uses to do so.

When to use it

Two cases account for most co-termination:

Aligning CSE with other SonicWall products. An organization with a number of firewalls, a CSE product, and other subscriptions can bring all of them onto one renewal date.

Aligning services within CSE. The expiration dates of SPA and SIA can drift apart, typically because they were purchased at different times or renewed separately. If SIA expires in one year and SPA in another, co-terminating the two removes the mismatch.

How the common date is calculated

The common date is derived from the relative remaining value of everything selected, not from an average of the dates.

A consequence worth anticipating: a high-value subscription dominates the result. Combining an expensive subscription with a small CSE license pulls the common date heavily toward the expensive one, because that is where most of the value sits. The effect is less pronounced when the selected items are closer in value.

Steps

  1. Open the co-termination feature and select the licenses or products that should share an expiration date. Items are selected per serial number.
  2. Review the comparison. The portal displays the current expiration date for each item, and the new date that co-termination would produce.
  3. Select whether to continue.

Note: Nothing changes until you confirm. The calculated date is presented first so that it can be rejected.
